I am currently looking out at the snow after a week of being sick with a virus. It has been lovely and cozy inside looking out at the snow-frosted trees sipping chicken broth, but now I am getting cabin fever or more specifically studio fever. I need to mush across the frozen tundra of my front yard and be with my paints and canvases.

Last night's Edmonds Art Walk was cancelled and so we all missed the reception at Gallery North for "Color, Light, and Laughter." The show is up until January 30th, so stop by and see it. Here are a few pieces I have at the gallery this month.

Successful Studio Tour

The 6th annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour is over for another year and it was a great success. We had 175 visitors in my studio this year. Several Paintings, calendars and cards found new homes and made room for me to create more.

Barn Owlets in Blue was sold to a couple celebrating their 17th anniversary.

During the tour I started painting Barn Owlet in Green and I completed it the following week. It will be at Gallery North in Edmonds for the month of October along with a "collection of owls" I have painted. Stop in and see them this month along with the "Celebrating 50 Years of Gallery North" exhibit that features paintings by former Gallery North members.

Edmonds Art Studio Tour Coming Soon

Working hard to get ready for the Edmonds Art Studio Tour coming up September 17 and 18th. Studios on the tour will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

My Studio is number 20 on the tour map but feel free to make it your first stop. We will have refreshments and full color maps of the tour on hand and would be happy to help you plan your tour.

Two Crows Studio opened the doors to its new location just days before the 2010 tour. If you came to my studio on last year’s tour you will see lots of changes. My studio has seen a years worth of work and the paint splatters to prove it. If you haven’t been to my studio before, this is a once a year opportunity to see the inside workings of Edmonds’ artist studios.

Norma J Bush will be a guest artist in my studio showing her beautiful and unique jewelry creations. We both have many works that we have created for sale during these two days. We both will be “artists in action” as time allows throughout the tour. Hope you will stop by and see us. It is a lot of fun to find a art lover and make a day of it - my friend and guest artist Norma and I visited the Camano Island and the Kirkland studio tours and it's lots of fun.

ARTSplash 2011

ARTSplash is an annual event featuring the work of ArtistsConnect members. There will be work in a variety of mediums (as you can see in the poster). There will be everything from glass art to pottery, jewelry to beaded assemblage, and painting in a variety of mediums. In addition to the wall art and sculpture, there will be jewelry, fused glass items, prints, and artful greeting cards. More than 40 artists, from seasoned to emerging artists participate in this fun show. This year ARTSplash is open during the Edmonds Third Thursday Art Walk in downtown Edmonds. We are open Thursday for 4-8 pm. We will also be open Friday from 4-8 PM and then Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

This year, if my neck cooperates, I will be an Artist in Action on Sunday from 10 - 12. It is held at Art Works 201 2nd Ave in Edmonds. The building is handicap accessible, and there is free parking. Refreshments will be served throughout the show but the Artists' Reception in Friday evening will feature a buffet.

Hope everyone can come to this event - see the art, meet the artists, buy art, vote for People's Choice, enjoy refreshments, and see artists in action.

Exciting News

Exciting news - at least for me. Not only did I get two paintings into the Edmonds Arts Festival juried exhibition, a major accomplishment in itself, I received an award!
Baby Barn Owls, a painting inspired by watching the Barn Owl nest cam, won an Honorable Mention. It is so exciting. Along with the excitment, there is this underlying feeling of being humbled by the competition. There were so many paintings that I admired and would have picked if I were the juror that didn't receive any mention. I always thought that actors are being falsely modest when they talk about being surprized and honored to be in the company of other great actors competing for an award. Now I wonder, I certainly feel suprized and honored. Anyway, I will not let this go to my head - it is afterall such a subjective decision. However, I deeply grateful that I was selected for the honor! Woooohooo!

Father's Day Weekend Events

I love this time of the year because there is always so much to do and see. This year I am involved in two events the same weekend and want to attend a third...

Artists' Garage Sale in Everett at the Schack Center on Saturday June, 18th, from 9:00 to 3:00pm. I will be participating this year, trying to make some room in my studio. It is a really fun event that is a combination garage sale and street fair. Lots of great art-related bargains. Artists selling art supplies and equipment that they no longer use; originial art, prints, magazines, bits and pieces - things that artists and art-lovers can appreciate all at garage sale prices. The Edmonds Arts Festival starts on Friday, June 17th and runs through Sunday the 19th. It is a wonderful festival, not just because it is in my home town, but because it attracts high caliber artists from around the country. There are: food and beverage booths, music and dance performances, outdoor and indoor art and craft booth, indoor juried exhibits of everything from jewelry and sculpture, to fiber and photography, to the various mediums of painting, and even K-12 artist exhibitions. This year I have two paintings in the Edmonds Arts Festival Juried Exhibition. "Baby Barn Owls" and "Love Crows." Gallery North - Faux Arts Show

The April Show at Gallery North this month is the Faux Art Show - A Celebration of Impersonation. Gallery Arts have chosen some of their favorite artists to emulate. I chose Vincent van Gogh's "Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase." As it is one of my earliest "wow" experiences. I remember looking at the painting and loving it as a very young girl and even then itching to paint it. Now all these years later I have attempted it. I now appreciate what he accomplished even more. 2011 Calendars in Two Styles

It has been a busy year in the studio for me, and many of my new paintings are featured in my limited edition 20110calendars. Here are the calendar covers with the images by month below. Both calendars have large spaces to note your events throughout the year and even a Notes for 2012 page.

I have a Crow calendar, that features crows in many forms (green, purple, red, and the more traditional black).

This year I have also created a Nature calendar that features work from abstracted hearts to trees, to winged and aquatic animals.

The calendars are available at Musings Artist Inspired, Gallery by the Bay, the Matthew Robert Salon during normal business hours, and at Two Crows Studio by appointment.

New Works at the Matthew Robert Salon in Edmonds

The Matthew Robert Salon is decked out for the holidays and is showing some of my newest work. You are welcome to visit the salon and look at the art during salon hours Tuesday through Saturday - no appointment necessary. The show runs through February 2011. I hope you can stop by.

The salon is also carrying my cat-themed holiday cards, featuring my two Pixie-bob cats sledding, playing in the snow, decorating their cat tree with festive fish lights, and putting toy mice on the Christmas tree.

ARTSplash 2010 promises to be a great show. I will be showing with 35 other artists at ArtWorks in Edmonds July 15 thru the 18th. I am getting everything ready to hang now. ARTSPlash will be part of the Edmonds Art Walk on Thursday night and the artists's reception is on Friday. During the weekend there will be an Artists in Action table set up where you can view various artists at work.
The small hummingbird painting on the poster is mine and it will be included in the "Tiny Treasurer" miniature show at ARTSplash.

Getting Closer!

Lots more progress on my new studio this month. The studio has passed the framing inspection and now has windows, siding and a deck. I am so anxious to be able to move in and start creating in this fabulous new space. You can see my new commute in the picture. Down our front steps from the house, across the courtyard, to my studio front door. Even with inclimate weather conditions it should not take more than a minute!

Happy New Year! I have just delivered some fresh 2010 Kathleen A. Johnson art to Musings Artist Inspired in Mill Creek. A larger Barred Owl and a small Barred Owl have joined the crows and hummingbirds on the walls. I also added some new crows "Blue Crow","Young Crow with Copper Sky," and "Out to see the World." Hope you enjoy them, as mch as I did painitng them. In addition to my paintings, there are cards, and calendars that I created.

New Owl Series

I am currently working on a new series of owl paintings inspired by a close encounter in July. On the way home from my studio there was a Barred Owl looking down at me from a telephone line that stretched over the roadway. I looked up at him thru the sun roof of my Subaru and he looked at me for awhile - once he decided I was neither prey nor predator he lost interest. I decided then that I wanted to start an owl series. I started small with the Saw Weet Owl but now I'm on to the bigger guys.

Puget Sound Artists' Gift Show

Saturday November 28th, for one day only I am in the Puget Sound Artists' Gift Show. It is located in the ArtWorks building at 2nd and Dayton in Edmonds. (One block East of the Car Ferry toll booth.)

There is free parking and there will be 30 artists and craftspersons' work available - all suitable for gift giving.

I will have my 2010 Art Calendars, "Crow" or "Natual Inspirations" (see picture)and greeting cards or various of my original art - either box for gift giving or loose cards. I also will have my Holiday Cats featuring my cats having fun with various winter activities (see picture).

If you are looking for a unique gift or ornament for the holidays, be sure to check out Musings Artist Inspired in Mill Creek Town Center. They have artwork from dozens of artists and craftspersons (including mine). It is so fun and inspiring to shop there, and there are "upside-down christmas trees" filled with hand crafted ornaments.

Musings has a special "Wish List" that you can take around with you as you shop and when you see something you would like for Christmas you can write it on the list (Marcia and Leigh Anne can help) . When you are finished take your wish list home with you and leave it somewhere conspicuous so "Santa" can find it. The wish list even had the address and phone number printed on it! Hi - I am delighted to announce that I will be showing some of my newest work at the Matthew Robert Salon in Edmonds. Matthew, the owner, is an avid art collector, appreciator and supporter of the art community. The salon, located at 22717 Hw 99, is in a charming old turn-of-the-century house and makes a great gallery location. You may see or purchase my work at the salon Tuesday thru Saturday.

New Series

Hi - I am working on a new series that I will have ready for the Edmonds Art Studio tour.

I have so enjoyed the Anna's and Rufous Hummingbirds that have been frequenting our yard and feeders and was inspired to try to capture their beauty on canvas. I also saw picture of a Saw Weet Owl and thought it would make a good subject for one of my minis (6x6" canvas) - I also want to paint the Barred Owl I saw down by my studio soon. So here is a sneak peek of my Owl and Hummingbird series in progress.

Pardon the after the fact post. Here are some images of the show to give you a flavor. There were about 40 artists and we each had about 16 square feet of wall or floor space. Here's my space and some of the 3-D space and the "Tiny Treasures" wall. During the show I sold 2 paintings, sold around 20 cards, and received several "People's Choice" votes on my work. All in all, a good show. :)

Art On The Town - Bellevue

Edmonds Arts Festival - Juried Show

I have some very exciting news (for me at least) - I received a notice that one of my pieces will be featured in the Edmonds Arts Festival Juried Exhibition. The piece is a dyptych called "Nesting", it is mostly acrylic but also has some shapes I cut out of my watercolor paintings. All pieces in the juried show are also available for sale, but the pieces will remain on display throught the show even if they are sold. I would include an image of my piece but for some reason I can't attach that particular image without the program changing all the colors. Matthew Roberts Salon

My show in the Matthew Robert salon has been a big success! My work is on display in the salon from November first until February 10, 2009. I have sold several paintings plus my calendars and boxes of cards. The salon is a great venue - the owner is very excited about art and encourages his customers to wander the salon and take in the art.

Sunset Bay Small Works Show

Another fabulous sunset at the Sunset Bay Gallery kicked off the "Small Works" show at the gallery. Eleven artists are participating and offer small works, either in size or price. The opening was November 15th, but the gallery is open every Saturday until the new year from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Of course there were sales at the opening, but there are still lots of wonderful pieces of original art available. In this show I have many of my popular digital art pieces, including "Sun Sunflower" and the award-winning "I Ching Crow."

Edmonds Art Studio Tour 2008

I was in Studio 1 again this year in the home of my friend Heather McGilvray a very talented artisan weaver. Heather's studio is in the daylight basement of this beautiful home and features several huge looms with works in progress.

This year we were joined by Sue T. Smith a talented watercolorist and print maker. Sue demonstrated reduction printing during the tour in the Kitchen/Family Room of Heather's home.

My art was displayed beautifully on the dark green walls of Heather's living room and dining room. This year I showed only my Acrylic paintings and cards and calendars. I had a new line of Cat-themed Holiday cards available this year. (Copyright Kathleen A. Johnson 2004-08). Tawny and Fresca are the models for all of the cat-themed cards and when they are not modeling share our home with us.

The Studio Tour was an unqualified success and scores of people came to see and purchase our artwork. I met and talked with many interesting people and had a great time.

ArtistsConnect an art organization in Edmonds that is sponsored by the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation had it's annual ARTSplash show. This is a show of about 50 of the active memebers of ArtistsConnect and is a terrific opportunity for art patrons to find many talented artists under one roof. The show features "Artists in Action", "Tiny Treasures - Miniature art", and is part of the Edmonds Art Walk.

I had 12 pieces in the show and sold a few tiny treasures as well as lots of my greeting cards. The Show was held at ArtWorks - "A Gathering Place for Artists" in Edmonds. This is the same location that ArtistsConnect holds it's monthly meetings and educational programs. See links below for more information.

Johnson, Ellie Polk, Lynn Scott, Nancy Thompson, and Kelly Tissot. It was a wonderful evening shared with family, friends, and art patrons capped off with a beautiful sunset. Events This Summer

In an attempt to make up for several months of missed blogs the next several (all posted today) represent some of the major events of my summer.

This summer was busy as I adjusted to having a studio outside my home. Since I last updated the blog I have joined the Sunset Bay Artist Colony, participated in three group shows, and in the Edmonds Art Studio Tour. I spent lots of time at Sunset Bay this summer, walking on the beach and painting like mad and as a result have neglected my blog.

Here is the Sunset Bay Artist Colony location(Also known as the Sunset Bay Wharf) at very low tide. I have a space near the water end of the wharf - about a third of the way in from the water. Most of the time I can hear the tide coming and going under my feet. It is very relaxing, meditative, and inspiring to listen to the water and be able to look out my studio window and see heron, eagles, crows, seals, water birds, and fish jumping. A walk on the beach is the way I usually start my time at the studio.

Here is the deck outside the door of my new studio - here I journal or just take a break while the paint is drying. There are five other artists who work at Sunset Bay Resort.

Two Crows

Here is the piece that inspired my studio and business name - Two Crows Studio. These two crows were very confident fledglings that I photographed at Woodland Park Zoo in 2003.

This piece is a very good example of my "digital collage" work, the photograph image of the crows, overlaid in Photoshop on a pastel background painting, then I digitally painted the shadows in.
